Eliphaz, the highest and, most likely, wisest of the three friends, is the first to speak to Job.
We know he carries importance because he is the first to speak, and in an honor-bound culture this is expected. We also know this because the Lord lists Eliphaz first in his judgment (see 42:7–9).
We noted in a previous sermon that Eliphaz comes from Teman, a land renowned for its wisdom. The friends have sat with Job, waiting for the opportunity to comfort him from his calamities.
But as they wait, they begin to realize that Job has sinned greatly. He has lost his children, his wealth, his status, and now his health. And it is not stopping. He has obviously sinned. There is no other possibility!
